Finding the Perfect Housing Option for You Hello, Illini! Now that you have accepted your offer of admission to Illinois (yay!!!), I am sure you are making your way through your Admitted Student Checklistâ€"housing included. With this blog, my hope is to answer any questions you may have about our many housing options on campus. All freshmen are required to live in residence halls. With so many options (37, to be exact), I am sure you will find the perfect place to call home. Illini can choose from any residence hall categorized as eitherUniversity Housingor Private Certified Housing. University Housing is owned by the University of Illinois, while Private Certified Housing is privately owned and operated but certified by the University of Illinois. One option is not necessarily better than the other; it is more about your personal preferences. University Housing There are 24 housing options, including 11 Living Learning Communities, within University Housing. With so many options, you may feel a little overwhelmed … … but do not worry! University Housing has a great comparison toolthat explains key features of each hall in order to help you narrow down your search based on your amenity preferences. As mentioned above, you have the option of selecting a Living-Learning Community. These communities are located in various residence halls throughout campus and provide students with in-hall course offerings and specialized programs around a common theme. Before making a decision, I also encourage you to make a trip to campus to view the options for yourself. University Housing offers tours Mondays through Fridays (except on holidays or university break periods) from 2 to 4 p.m. If you are unable to come to campus, you can tour these options virtually. After looking at all of your options, you may feel like University Housing is the right fit for you. If this is the case, you will be able to apply for University Housing starting 24 hours after accepting your offer of admission to Illinois. The priority deadline to register for University Housing is May 15. If you submit your housing contract by this date, youll be put in a lottery that will randomly assign you a time ticket to register for housing. Youll then be able to choose from available rooms across campus. At this time, youll also be able to set up your meal plan and state your roommate preferences. You can either room with someone you already know or choose to be randomly matched with a roommate (who could very well become your new best friend!). Private Certified Housing One of our Private Certified Housing options may also be a great fit for you. Private Certified Housing options accommodate anywhere from 4 to 710 students, and they each offer something unique, from pools to in-room kitchens to weekly housekeeping. Just like University Housing, Private Certified Housing has a comparison tool on its website to help break down the amenities and opportunities offered at each facility so you can determine the best fit for you.Before making a decision, I encourage you to tour the Private Certified Housing options you are interested in. Tour times vary depending on location. However, the application process is very different from University Housing. With University Housing, theres just one application for all residence hall options. With Private Certified Housing, each facility has its own application and process. The sooner you can apply to Private Certified Housing the better, because it is on a first-come, first-served basis, and some options have limited space availability. Bodies are found far away from the cities were nobody can find them. Fortunately women are now being protected by laws that say that no type of violence can be committed against women. Keydy Vasquez Cerrato Mr. Newcomer Junior English CP November 7, 2017 John Proctor and his Decision In the play, The Crucible by Arthur Miler there is one character that is true to him and stands out above all the rest. Throughout the play, John Proctor shows some ideal qualities that are not found on the other characters. The play takes place in Salem, Massachusetts where religion and corruption are rampant, and soon two girls fall "ill" unexplainably and it spark ideas of evil and witchery in the town. Abigail, a citizen in the town starts pointing fingers at those who appear to have dealings with the devil, which inspires grave misfortune for many. Amongst all the lying and deceit in the play, John Proctor was able to stay true to himself and what he believed in and became a fighter against the injustice in Salem. One concept that flows through the play is the idea of lying and deceit. When hale questions Abigail abut witch craft, she blames Tituba for everything. Abigail says that Tituba made her drink blood, cursed her dreams, and tempted her to sin. Hale questions Tituba and say that she will be off the hook if she admits that she has been working with the devil and if she tells him the names of people who had contact with the devil. Tituba, who is charged with witch craft, denied it at first. However, Tituba became frightened when Parris told her "confess yourself or I will take you and whip you to your death" As a black female slave she has no power. She cannot defend herself against Abigail's accusations, even though they both know Abigail is lying. Though Tituba is lying in order to save her life, she accuses Sarah Good and Goody Osburn of having contact with the devil. Since Tituba lied, now Sarah Good and Goody Osburn will have to be hanged. In addition, when Proctor told the court about his affair with Abigail, the court summons Elizabeth Proctor. Proctor defended his wife by saying that she is incapable of lying. When she entered no one was allowed to speak. Elizabeth Proctor is in a tough situation. She can either tell the truth or save her husband of adultery or lie and to save him but also go against her morals. In the end she decides to lie. Though she did it to save the reputation of her husband, little did she know the consequences that followed her act. Proctor is taken away because "she mentioned nothing lechery" John needed his wife to be honest and she failed to meet his request. Proctor is put in jail because of a lie that could have been prevented. Moreover, when Abigail, Mercy, and Betty were accused if witch craft, Abigail denied such accusations. Mary Warren's inability to faint in front of the court gives Abigail and the other girls the perfect opportunity to pretend that Marry Warren has sent out her spirit against them. The court is likely to discard Mary's testimony in view of the evidence that Abigail provides. John Proctor stood up for what he believed in so he stayed true to himself. Proctor mentioned to his wife that he had spent time alone with Abigail. Elizabeth gets upset. Proctor gets angry because he believes Elizabeth is accusing him of dishonesty and is suspicious that he has resumed his affair, John has tried to please Elizabeth to gain her forgiveness but nothing seemed to work. John is tired of Elizabeth's suspicions and goes against her by saying "Women. I'll not have your suspicion any more" Proctor regrets his affair with Abigail. His own guilt along with Elizabeth's accusation, wearies him. He knows has done wrong and by standing up for himself, he stays true to himself as wells as his wife. Furthermore, Proctor did not go to church as often as he should have, which is greatly frowned upon. He did not like Parris' ways of preaching and as a result, he refused to go. Proctor did not see the light in God because of Parris' preaching's. Over 60 million Americans make some sort of wager every day.1 When compared to other recreations(in billions of dollars) in 1990, gambling institutions made 2.2 more than magazine sales, 8.3 more than book sales, 20.9 more than theaters, and a whopping 21.8 more than movies.2 This number has increased to this high level because of the growth in the amount of legalized gambling establishments and the accessibility to these establishments, both of which increases the number of gamblers. The compulsive or pathological gambler affects society most. According to Stuart Winston, The compulsive gambler is the backbone of gambling. Without the compulsive gambler, there would be no Las Vegas, no Off Track Wagering. Two thirds of the race tracks in America would close. The attendance of sporting events would drop 50%, and T.V. wouldn't bother with sports beyond championship events.....The compulsive gambler bets a piece of his life everyday, and a piece of his family's. The other 45 million people who gamble are having fun.(Out of the 60 million who gamble every day)3 These gamblers often resort to crime to pay off their debts and anger. Even though legalized gambling has changed through time, and has been "accepted" in America today, it remains detrimental to society, and should not be legal anywhere. American gambling can be traced back to the early years of the nation. Different forms of gambling, such as lotteries, remained popular until 1890, when U.S. jurisdiction made lotteries and all other forms of gambling illegal by direct prohibition.4 Gambling had become more and more a "low life" thing to do. These low lifes, called "rowdies", would bet or take a bet on anything. Most tried to look different from everyone else by wearing thick imitation gold chains, a dyed black mustache, a velvet coat, and long hair. New York City alone had about 30,00 people earning a living from gambling in the 1890's. The casino's were plush and usually had a buffet with alcohol. The operation made a lot of money, most from cheating. Each casino would hire "agents" to come in and claim winning keno numbers, afterwards giving most of it back to the casino. Counterfeit money was also handed out to the few people who happened to win. Any protest from a loser and he would end up with a black eye. Oscar Handlin said, "An individual may sometimes take away substantial sums of money, but in the long run the banker must win."5 Essentially, gambling hurt society in the early years of America. For the next 25 years, gambling became unpopular again because of reports of cheating and changing American values. Anything thought of to be harmful to society became illegal. For example, alcohol became illegal by Prohibition. The reintroduction of gambling resulted in the return of corruption and fraud. By the mid 1920's, state after state abolished its anti-gambling laws. Gambling had become more and more accepted because of churches holding bingo sessions and legitimate racetracks being built. In 1931, gambling became totally legalized in Nevada to replace the money the state was getting from depleted ore rich mountains.6 Organized crime started to turn toward gambling as their main source of income after Prohibition ended in 1933. These criminals made most of their money bootlegging alcohol during Prohibition, so once alcohol prices went down, they needed another way to make a lot of money fast: gambling.7 Organized crime started getting more involved with gambling once Las Vegas started to boom. Bugsy Siegal, a half insane murderer who was sent to Nevada to enforce mob control of the race wire services, opened up the first hotel/casino in Las Vegas. His hotel, the Flamingo began a long period of gang involvement in Las Vegas. In 1947, the Desert Inn opened, run by a gang from Cleveland.
